Starting to use MagiCAD

When this information is saved in a template, it is saved for future use and saves from the trouble of creating all these manually in every new project.
MagiCAD for Revit is shipped with a sample template called MagiCAD-HPVE_General_2011_11.rte. You should use this when you start to practice with MagiCAD on Revit, but later on you need to create your own templates that  better suit  your personal requirements.
We suggest that you use MagiCAD’s template as a base when you create your own templates. As Revit’s default templates contain a lot of information that is not compatible with MagiCAD. E.g. duct sizes, pipe materials and sizes as well as fluid temperatures are different in Revit and MagiCAD templates.


The MagiCAD Dataset is a storage system for MagiCAD products (for example air devices, duct components, radiators, valves etc.) and is a design data system for sizing methods and insulation series. The products and design data must be imported from the dataset to the Revit project.
Before the products can be used in MagiCAD for Revit, they must be imported to a Dataset. From a Dataset they are imported to a Revit project. MagiCAD is shipped with a sample dataset called MagiCAD Revit_Common_2011.11.mrv. You can freely create other datasets that fulfil your requirements.
If you fail to import the design data to your project, MagiCAD calculations do not work, nor can you install insulation to the ducts and pipes. Design data is already imported to a Revit project if you use MagiCAD’s sample template.

Starting a new project

When MagiCAD is installed and a new project is created, MagiCAD’s default template is suggested as a default template. Use this until you have created your own templates. When the Revit design view opens, you can basically start designing immediately. However, we suggest that before you do this, load the dataset into your project. Select the default dataset MagiCAD Revit_Common_2011.11.mrv. Later you can edit the Dataset as described in the chapter “Dataset”. The datasets in the subfolders are customised for different market areas. 

Drawing pipes and ducts

Before you start drawing the pipes and the ducts you must have loaded MagiCAD’s pipes and ducts into the project. See the details in “Importing data from dataset to project / Creating pipe and duct series“. If you are using the MagiCAD template, rectangular and circular ducts as well as copper and steel pipes are already loaded into the Revit project.
If you do not import MagiCAD pipes and ducts into the project, MagiCAD still works, but sizing does not work correctly. More information on installing the components and the calculations is described in the appropriate chapters.

Working in a team

Worksharing allows simultaneous access to a shared model through the use of a central model. Use worksharing when multiple team members are working with a single model (one RVT file).
